Jesus Was Never Inaugurated

A presidential inauguration is something to behold. Music, poetry, decorations, speeches, fashion, and tradition blend together telling us a narrative of our nation––past, present, and future. While these historical moments are endearing and vital symbols of progress and equality are woven throughout, the story can be misleading.

New beginnings and earthly demonstrations of glory confuse the soul. If you were hopeful yesterday you were likely in despair four years ago. If you were in despair yesterday you were likely hopeful four years ago. It can be a vicious cycle.

Church, what we must concede is that true glory lasts.

If every four years our hope is in jeopardy, the object of our hope needs revision. If every four years visible glory unites us, the power of our union needs revision. Therefore every presidential inauguration is a reminder to us that what we really need is not new executive leadership, we need lasting redemption.

Christian hope is not anchored in an inauguration. The source of our power is in the one who has no beginning and will have no end. Our lasting joy is found in one whom we did not elect nor would we have chosen. Jesus Christ was never inaugurated because he has always been Lord. To be sure, during his earthly ministry he inaugurated his kingdom. But his kingdom has always been an ever increasing demonstration of his preexisting and eternal authority.

As such our Lord and his kingdom require no four-year refresh. And when our hope lies fully in him and his glory, though sorrow may come, joy always defines our purchased and sealed future.
