Jesus is for the oppressed: dec 14 sermon summary
In his teaching, Jason explores how Jesus provides healing and freedom for the oppressed. Drawing from Luke 4:18-19 and Isaiah 61, the sermon emphasizes Jesus’ mission to bring liberty to the oppressed and offers hope for those hurt by others' greed, control, power, or systemic injustice.
Oppression began with Satan’s manipulation in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). Through deception and gaslighting, Satan sowed doubt in God’s character and led humanity into shame and sin.
Where there is oppression, there is often also a struggle against that oppression.
When we are oppressed or sinned against, we often respond in shame, which manifests in four ways (based on Donald Nathanson’s "Compass of Shame"): Withdrawal, attacking oneself, avoidance, and attacking others. These responses attempt to liberate us from shame but often perpetuate the cycle.
The good news is there is freedom for the oppressed. God consistently responds to oppression with compassion and proximity: God called out to Adam and Eve and He sent an angel to Elijah. Jesus offered living water to the Samaritan woman and Jesus healed the soldier attacked by Peter. On the cross, Jesus endured ultimate shame and oppression to transform shame into glory, freeing humanity from unjust powers (Colossians 2:15). Jesus’ act on the cross disarmed oppressive forces and provided healing by refusing to let shame define or destroy him.
