Jesus is for the afflicted: Dec 1 sermon summary
As we continue into the advent season, this weekend we talked about affliction. The Advent season begins by focusing on Jesus' ministry as an adult, emphasizing his first sermon in Luke 4. Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1-2, declaring the fulfillment of the prophecy about bringing good news to the poor and freedom to the oppressed, signaling a message for everyone, not just Israel.
The Story of Affliction:
Jesus' teaching redirects focus from identifying "neighbors" to embodying love as shown in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-36).
God's love, revealed through the Trinity, is central to understanding affliction. Jesus' message focuses on God's boundless love rather than merely the afflicted's condition.
The Nature of Affliction:
Affliction is both spiritual (poverty of the soul, moral bankruptcy) and material (physical lack or oppression).
Jesus' message transcends debates about whether he meant spiritual or material poverty; it encompasses both, offering hope to all who lack resources to flourish spiritually or physically.
The Hope of Affliction:
Jesus enters human poverty—both material and spiritual—demonstrating proximity and power.
By embracing poverty and becoming sin, Jesus fulfills the sacrificial system’s imagery, becoming the "scapegoat" who bears and removes human sin (Leviticus 16:21-22).
Jesus’ identification with the afflicted transforms affliction into hope, reshaping relationships with God and others.
What does this mean for us?
Jesus is the Good Samaritan. He embodies grace and mercy, transforming enemies into neighbors. He shows boundless Love and exemplifies that love should not be confined to boundaries but extended to everyone; his message is inclusive of all people. Lastly, we are called to Action. Followers of Jesus are invited to care for the materially and spiritually poor, seeing service to them as service to Christ himself (Matthew 25:40).
Jesus’ message is one of profound hope and transformation. He is for the afflicted—both materially and spiritually—offering healing and redemption. His love crosses boundaries and calls us to embrace everyone with the same grace and mercy he demonstrates. Jesus is truly for everyone.
