Walking in the Light, Alone

In last week's sermon we mentioned a research project about millennials and online church attendance during COVID. It was done by the Barna Group. One of their findings was that fifty percent of millennials have essentially stop being part of their churches during the pandemic. This reveals a lot. One thing which I find particularly vital to consider is our need for accountability.

The biblical writer, John taught his readers to walk in the light as Jesus is in the light (1 John 1:7). The light of Christ reveals and exposes. But his light also heals. Walking in the light is difficult. It can even be painful. Being known during COVID seems especially costly. That means a lot of different things. But one of the temptations when accountability is easily avoided is to disregard God's call to holiness. Sin and spiritual lethargy seem easy to choose when we're are physically distant.

This is an evil deception. It's why the Apostle Paul wrote to the Galatian church ...

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Galatians 6:7-10

I know you're tired. I know digital forms of worship and gathering are not ideal. I know it's easy to sleep in, make excuses, choose isolation, and seek instant forms of comfort and gratification. But God is graciously warning us ... avoiding the light of righteousness and accountability corrupts. Only walking in the light and taking care of each other brings healing and joy.

By God's Spirit we are empowered to walk in the light. May we not grow weary in this good, together.
