Only Children Rest
Sunday we explored Elijah’s emotional collapse after his dramatic victory over the prophets of Baal. Despite his faithfulness and success, Elijah flees in fear when Jezebel threatens his life. Exhausted and despairing, he asks God to take his life, feeling utterly alone and defeated.
Instead of rebuking Elijah, God meets him gently—through food, rest, touch, and presence. Elijah is given time to recover physically and emotionally. God doesn’t respond with grand displays of power but reveals Himself in a “still small voice,” showing that divine love is not always loud or dramatic—it’s personal, tender, and restorative.
We often forget our Father God’s practical love for us, living as if His love is absent. In our fear, disappointment, and weariness, we long for comfort or escape. Yet God, like a good Father, gives not what we want but what transforms us—a love that invites intimacy over information, process over performance, and transformation over transaction.
Reflection Questions
Where in your life right now are you tempted to forget God's love—perhaps through fear, disappointment, or weariness?
How have you experienced God’s love in gentle, unexpected ways—like a moment of rest, a nourishing meal, or the quiet presence of someone who cares?
Are you open to hearing God in the whisper—instead of waiting for the wind, earthquake, or fire? What might it look like for you to listen more closely this week?
